Gatty got all excited earlier this week when Fantasy Craft came out, and I decided to pick it up. Well, it's a great game system, from what I can tell. It's got a really bad case of the "What the Fuck are You Talking About"-itis that all RPG source books seem to be infected with, so I'm writing a "How To Play the Damn Game" paper. In the process, I got a really cool character idea in my head, and I thought I'd put him up here. He's fun.

People think it'd be really great to be born into a line directly descended from angels. The definition of grace and beauty in their very blood, bred-in resistance to temptation and evil, plus, there's the whole "ageless" thing that most people would kill for. You're a hero and a legend pretty much by definition, it's just a matter of how many kingdoms you wind up saving. Legends and lore are littered with great heroes of angelic descent, champions for good and justice, righting the wrongs of the world with their holy might.
Joash Eliah, actually being one of those people, would very much disagree. Sure, there's some benefits, the stuff the rumors and legends go on about are some nice perks. But look at it from the other perspective. You're innately moral. Regular human beings have the choice between doing the right thing or not, he got that chosen for him. It seems like a stupid complaint to have, but when you're just trying to get by doing some minor enforcer work, feeling sick to your stomach if you take a job from someone you know is an evil bastard can make your life somewhat difficult. He can lie, cheat or steal, but he'll feel awful about it until he confesses or makes restitution. It's something he's learned to live with to get by, but it's not made him into a particularly rosy person. He's sarcastic, acerbic, and can be something of an ass at times.
If you ask him about it, he'd wish that he could abandon his angelic heritage, that it's a burden around his neck and that if he could turn his scruples on and off like normal human beings can, his life would be so much easier. He doesn't like talking about his lineage, even though he's spent a good deal of time learning about it himself. He's even ashamed of his name, which means "fire of God". To everyone but his mother, he's "Jo", plain and simple.
But that's a line of bullshit. Secretly, he knows that despite how hard his heavenly blood has made his life, he wouldn't have it any other way. Doing the right thing usually just gives people the warm fuzzies, but for Joash, it's an affirmation of what he is. He's not just a person who does good things, he's literally a good person. He really does feel better when he turns down the job offered to him by a scumbag thug, and there's nothing he'd rather be doing than helping out those who can't help themselves. He knows that this isn't all his angelic heritage, that he really is a good person, but he'd be much less frustrated about the whole thing if it was his choice. _________________ Gatac: Disco Jesus is a dick.
