And I'm only 50% through the game, so the events transpiring in the PS2 game will have no bearing on our game. I just like using the names of the places to further separate our world from the characters' world.

I'm mostly looking for setting information, rather than story background. Is this pretty much Los Angeles with another name, or is the geography significantly different? If not, is there a rough map of the city I can find somewhere? Other city info?

I think it's better to ignore the map from the game and just have it be LA with different names. The GTA games have some oddities that make it difficult, and they're usually too small to do a lot with.
